Phonics

The phonics scheme used across EYFS and Key Stage 1 is Letters and Sounds, supported by resources from Monster Phonics.

Here is a list of free on-line resources you can use at home with your children to support their Phonics progression.

Reading and Guided Reading

Pupils at St Monica’s following our Reading Pathway from Year 1 through to Year 6. On this pathway, pupils are regularly monitored to ensure they are on the correct part of the pathway. The pathway includes titles frmom: Engage Literacy, Oxford Reading Tree, Longman, Treetops, Project X, Usborne, and Collins Big Cat.

When pupils reach the end of the banded book band pathway, they are taught and guided to self-select titles from our central fiction library. In order to promote a variety in children’s reading diet, the pupils are encouraged to read books from one of each category across the half term: fantasy, mystery, adventure, scary, animal, real-life, poetry, and information. These genres are colour coded and children change books as and when necessary.

Across the school, guided reading is predominantly taught as a whole class session. Since academic year 2016 – 2017, the pupils have used the Nelson Comprehension scheme. To supplement this, teachers also use Rigby Navigator where necessary. Across EYFS and Key Stage 1, teachers will also make use of the Engage Literacy scheme.
